DAY 7 - DUBROVNIK
-
ROME
We
depart for Dubrovnik driving along the fascinating Adriatic coastline
which was first settled by the Illyrian's over 5000 years ago. Poised over
crystal clear waters, a fairytale city comes to life with moats and wooden
draw-bridges, the fortress of St. John, a Gothic-Renaissance treasury of
our times is fully encircled by 12th century city walls. We visit the
Stradun, the Velika Cesma, Monastery of the Holy Savior, incorrupt body of
St. Sylvan, churches of St. Roc and St. Ignatius before leaving late
afternoon for Rome where we are greeted upon arrival by our Peace Center
Tours representative who assists us to our hotel.
Day 8 Holy Rome Vatican St. Peter's
Basilica Papal Audience*
This brief description is certainly not enough to transmit
the deep emotions you will feel when you visit this special place. Travel
back in time to the sacred gravesite of St. Peter descending from the
upper Renaissance church to the the tomb below. Who wouldn't be moved at
visiting the sites where St. Peter was crucified and St. Paul was
beheaded, where St. John was cast into boiling oil? The chair of St.
Peter, see Michelangelo's incomparable works in St. Peter's and the
magnificent Sistine Chapel. Walking in the Imperial Forum where the
Roman Senators met and worshipped, once the center of ancient Rome, is an
indescribable feeling.
Then, enter the Coliseum which will bring to life for you
the days of ancient Rome where huge crowds gathered - once
the center of the world.
Day
9 Holy Rome
Driving
past the baths of Caracalla,
and the Circus Maximus
along the Appian Way, the Chapel of
"Domine Quo Vadis?" to the Catacombs of St. Callista*, we arrive
and begin our descent into
the city of the dead, multistoried rows where
larger chambers of the more noble occupants often were remembered with
frescoes. We find scenes from the Old and New testaments, symbolic
figures, scenes from real life, and those purely decorative such as
flowers, birds, vases, and geometrical ornamentations.
Leaving the Catacombs, we stop next at the tomb of the great Apostle St. Paul built by
Constantine's mother St. Helena. Visit the Basilica of St. Peter in
Chains which houses
intact the sacred chains that had imprisoned St. Peter - iron more
precious than gold.
Visit the Sacred
Stairs believed to have been the very same ones which Jesus climbed
brought to Rome by St. Helena, St.
John Lateran - where the popes resided from the time Constantine had it built
until 1304 and the majestic Basilica of St. Mary Major containing a miraculous image of the Blessed
Mother and many other sacred objects of our faith.

According to a 4th
century document: "Peter was about to go out through the city's gates when
he saw Christ come towards him. He worshipped him and said: 'Lord, where
are you going?' Christ answered: 'I come to Rome to be crucified again'.
And Peter said: 'Lord, you are to be crucified again?' And the Lord said:
'Yes, I will be crucified again'. Peter then said: 'Lord, I will go back,
following you'. At that point, the Lord ascended to heaven as Peter's gaze
followed him. He was staring
transfixed and weeping with the comfort of it. When he became aware of his
surroundings again, he understood that those words signified his own
martyrdom, how, that is, the Lord would suffer in him, as he always
suffers in his chosen people through pitiful compassion and their glorious
celebration."
Day 10 ASSISI
Through enchanting Umbria's
lush vineyards and rolling hills to a place where our
worries give way to inspiration - Assisi. We ascend to the
mystical city of St. Francis’ and St. Clare encircled by
ramparts, hardly changed since the Middle Ages. Our prayers
are heard as we visit his crypt and
the convent of the incorrupt
body of St. Clare is a profound experience. Intimate places
in the lives of these two saints is intertwined when we
visit the place of his baptism,
Santa Maria degli Angeli, the Portiuncula - the roseto
into which St. Francis threw himself to overcome temptation,
the cave in which he lived and the cross where St. Francis
received his stigmata.
